About Liberia

The exciting coastal nation of Liberia is located in West Africa and is home to about 3.5 million people, with just over half a million of them living in the capital city of Monrovia. The nation became an independent country, the first in Africa, back in 1847. Some of the other major centers are Greenville, Buchanan, Harper, Ganta, and Robertsport.

The Atlantic coast is about 350 miles long with over half of it being beaches. The land also features shallow lagoons, mangrove swamps, creeks, mountains, rivers, dense forests, and rainforest. The official language is English. However, there are several local languages spoken as well. Liberia enjoys a hot, tropical climate and the temperatures are always pretty consistent. There’s a wet season between May and October and it’s relatively dry between December and March.

Sapo National Park is one of the best places to view the country’s natural beauty as it’s a wonderful rainforest that’s ideal for jungle treks, canoe safaris, and land safaris. A trip down the Sinoe River is also a great way to view the scenery. Boating and swimming can be done at most of the

nation’s sandy beaches, such as Bernard’s, Cedar, Caesar’s, Cooper’s, Elwa, Kendaje, Kenema, and Sugar Beaches.

Lake Piso is another good place for watersports with the best season for diving being between December and May. The Saint Paul and Mesurado rivers offer good fishing as does the coast and Lake Piso. You’ll find quite a few fishing villages in these areas. Monrovia lies on the coast and features lagoons, rocky headlands, and inlets and there are several good beaches close by.

If you’re traveling by air, there’s a major airport in Monrovia, which is about 35 miles from the city. The best way to reach town is by private transportation. You can reach the country by water as there are major ports in Monrovia, Greenville, Greenville, Greenville, Robertsport, and Harper. You can reach the nation by road from Guinea Republic and Ivory Coast, but it’s hard to do in the rainy season.

When you’re inside Liberia there are about 60 airfields and 50 small airports if you want to travel by light plane. There’s a ferry which runs from Monrovia to Buchanan and a boat from Harper to Greenville. There’s no rail service at the moment, but cars can be hired and you can also find taxis in the biggest towns.

The motels, hotels, and restaurants dish up American, Asian, European, African, and Lebanese food and it’s very tasty. Some of the local favorites are goat soup, Cabbage cooked pigs’ feet and bacon, palm nuts with fish and shrimp, chicken stock, and rice bread made from mashed bananas. Liberia brews several good beers as well as palm wine and ginger beer.

The nightlife in Monrovia is very active as there are numerous discos, bars, and nightclubs that are open late. On Providence Island there’s a bandstand with an amphitheater that feature traditional African dance and music shows.

Liberia is an ideal country for adventurous nature lovers to visit as it offers excellent places to enjoy the natural beauty of the coast and the sensational interior.
